This course provides a structured academic study of Sufism (Tasawwuf) as the spiritual and ethical dimension of Islam. Students will explore the concept of Ihsan, purification of the soul (Tazkiyah), spiritual discipline, and moral refinement as developed within the classical Islamic tradition.
The course examines major themes, terminology, historical development, and scholarly debates related to Sufism, situating Islamic spirituality firmly within Qur’an, Sunnah, and mainstream Sunni scholarship.

Instructor:
Dr. Zafar Anjum is an Associate Professor of Instruction at the University of Texas at Dallas. He holds a Ph.D. in Arabic from Aligarh Muslim University, India, along with triple Master’s degrees. With over 35 years of experience, he has served as an Islamic scholar, Imam, educator, and community leader, specializing in Islamic sciences and spirituality.
